What is First Portrait?

Your ultrasound photo engraved in stone

A photo fades. An engraving doesn't. An ultrasound photo is one of the most beautiful memories of pregnancy, and we engrave it into natural stone. Beneath the image, we engrave a short text of your choice, such as a date and a name.

Lasts foreverLaser engraving lasts for decades, unlike a paper print.
Engraved in FinlandEvery stone is engraved one at a time, in Pirkanmaa, Finland.
No two alikeNatural stone varies slightly in surface and tone, so every stone is one of a kind.
Key Flag Symbol

Key Flag Symbol

First Portrait carries Finland's Key Flag Symbol. Every stone is engraved by hand, here in Finland.

Do you remember the moment you first saw your baby? Still just a black-and-white image on a screen.

Photos fade, but this moment doesn't have to. It can be engraved so it never disappears.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about First Portrait

What kind of ultrasound photo works best?+
A clear, black-and-white or greyscale photo works best. If you're unsure, you can send more than one and we'll choose the best one.
Do I need to remove the text shown on the photo?+
No need to worry about that – we crop out any text visible on the photo before engraving. If you prefer, you're also welcome to send us an already-cropped version yourself.
Why is it called First Portrait?+
The name refers literally to your baby's very first photo. In many countries, an early ultrasound scan takes place during the first trimester of pregnancy, and for many parents that ends up being their baby's very first photo. First Portrait can be engraved from any ultrasound photo, though – a later scan or an earlier one works just as well.
Does photo quality affect the result?+
Yes, so it's worth choosing the sharpest, highest-quality photo you have. The clearer the original image, the more beautifully the details come through in the engraving.
Is every stone a little different?+
Yes – we use natural slate, so each stone's surface and edges have their own character. Small variations between stones are normal, and they add their own touch to each stone's uniqueness.
How long does it take to make?+
Production takes about 10–14 days from your order. After that, it's delivered to your nearest pickup point or straight to your door. You'll always see the exact delivery options and price for your address at checkout. Read more in our Shipping Policy.
Can I display the stone at home?+
Absolutely! First Portrait is designed to be displayed – it looks wonderful on a shelf or nightstand.
Does First Portrait make a good gift?+
Extremely well – for example for grandparents-to-be or godparents. First Portrait is delivered in beautiful gift packaging.
